Diamond Digital Development is pivoting to a community-first, open-source software collective. We have done away with our previous SaaS products, and rebuilt our digital image from the ground up.
A personal note from WillTDA (Founder of Diamond Digital Development)
“For the past few years, I’ve been very on-and-off with DDD. I’ve mostly used this platform I’ve built to just share my projects, even if they never end up going anywhere. Last summer, I finished college and graduated with a Level 3 Extended National Diploma in Information Technology. Now that it’s behind me, I have had a lot more free time to do my own thing. My main area of interest has been EDM production, which is another reason why I haven’t been pushing DDD’s projects forward as fast as I used to. Burnout’s also a sucker.”
The pivot to fully open-source
Diamond Digital Development has always been this inconsistent mix of closed and open-source software, false promises and project cancellations. We’ve realised that this is because DDD has always been framed as some sort of “company”. That’s why we made the decision to re-label Diamond Digital Development as an Open Source Software Collective.
What’s changed/changing?
The gist is this:
- The Diamond Digital Development website has a fresh, mature new look to reflect our new open-source-first nature and our mission.
- No more SaaS products. No accounts, no subscription-based services, and no closed source products to gain revenue.
- DiamondLLM, our AI large language model service, has been sunset.
- The Diamond Digital Development API project has been dropped.
- The Diamond Digital Development Merch Store on Spring has been closed down. Buy Me a Coffee is now our main source of voluntary donations.
- Codeshare, our code snippet sharing service, has been sunset. We are discussing internally about a possible open-source rewrite.
- EcoBot, our Discord “economy bot”, continues to operate. We are discussing internally about a possible open-source rewrite.
This is the last time that projects will be cancelled following their announcement. New projects will be announced when they are published to GitHub.
What’s gonna be the same?
- Diamond Digital Development’s team is to stay the same:
- Founder/Lead Developer: WillTDA (Will Knowles)
- Community Manager/Contributor/Logo Design: TheFuturisticIdiot (Danny Brand)
- The pivot to open-source takes a load off our shoulders, so work on projects can be carried out by practically anyone!
- Donations from the community via Buy Me a Coffee will be our only source of income. DDD doesn’t cost a lot to maintain (as of right now). We take advantage of OCI Always Free compute instances, so money really just goes into domain names and any development tools we choose to use. We’re not in huge trouble if there are no donations, but if you want to thank us for building something useful, or to fuel our team’s motivation, we’d appreciate it! Discord server perks aren’t going anywhere either.
2026 is going to be a great year for Diamond Digital Development as well as the open-source world. Talk soon!
